My First ABC - Crosspost #5

Program overview posted at TheAppPodcast.com.

Program Functionality: B / The app is clean and easy to press the buttons but the applicaton images can hinder learning as mentioned in the purpose grade.

Purpose: B / As Jared points out in his review, the images don't translate very well. I agree that the J for jelly fish could have been easily confused with octopus. The quizzing portion doesn't really asses their spelling as much as it does the image recognition that the application has chosen for the letters.

Overall Educational Value: C / This app does have some nice data that can be pulled out of the application by a teacher, but the assessment doesn't necessarily assess what the teacher needs to know. If there were multiple images it might also become more useful.

Cost: $.99

Recommendation: We moderately recommend this app for personal use, but we are not recommending it for school use at this time.

Spell it Rite - Crosspost #4

Program overview posted at TheAppPodcast.com.

Program Functionality: A / The app is very easy to use

Purpose: B / This is another drill and practice type of application. I had a student demo this for me and the student whipped through the app without trying to learn from their mistakes. They said they liked it but in reality, I didn't see very much "learning" from their mistakes.

Overall Educational Value: C / This type of application would make an impact in classrooms as I repeatedly mention if the teacher had some control and or funcationality to implement current class lists, etc. There doesn't seem to be a way to pull out any useful data about the students mistakes, etc. There is a free version that might have some functionality by simply being a 5 minute class filler.

Cost: $.99

Recommendation: We moderately recommend this app for personal use, but we are not recommending it for school use at this time.

Quotation Dictionary and Trivia - Crosspost #3

Program overview posted at TheAppPodcast.com.

Program Functionality: A

Purpose: B- This app is a good example of what might be useful on a personal level to fill a need or niche group, but this isn't an app that would really work well in a school setting. The power of these devices would be a lot more effective with different apps.

Overall Educational Value: C-  We see some potential with this type of control of an educational app, but this simply isn't cost effective for classroom use at this time.

Cost: $4.99

Recommendation: We moderately recommend this app for personal use, but we are not recommending it for school use at this time.

The US States & Capitals - reviewed by TheAppPodcast.com

Jared at TheAppPodcast.com walks us through another practice application focused on "geography". We can see some use in this application in that students who practice with it might be better prepared for "Leno's Jay Walking" experience. They might not look as silly as some of their guests if they practice with this app.

We hope to have an official review of this application down the road as we ask some "Social Studies" teachers to take a look at this application. Anyone use it in their classroom or with students?

Nice job again Jared. Check out TheAppPodcast.com for more general app reviews.

Poddio - Podcasting Studio reviewed by TheAppPodcast.com

Poddio is a nice looking resource that schools might check out for student created podcasts. Jared Hill reviewed this application at TheAppPodcast.com.  The I Education Apps Review has not been able to review it with students or teachers so we can't tell you for sure how it would grade out educationally, but it looks good.

Cost: $9.99 seems pretty expensive but the app does appear to be pretty robust. Hopefully we will get a chance to test this out with students soon.

Nice job Jared with your review... If there are any teachers out there who have used this app, please comment here.  Additionally, check out our Ning (Online Community) devoted to helping teachers utilize these devices to the their fullest.
