Virtual History: Roma by Mike Hall II

App Title:  Virtual History:  Roma

Cost:  1-19 copies = $9.99

          20+ copies = $4.99 (through Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program)

Roma is one of the best history apps on the market (and why it is one of the most expensive).  Roma, as the full title suggests, contains many 3D objects which you can ‘manipulate’ with your fingers (zoom, turn, etc.).  It also has a “bubble” view of various locations.  “Bubble” view acts as if you were standing right in the middle of the Stabian Baths in Pompeii, for example.  If you move the iPad around, up and down, the screen acts like you are actually there looking around, taking in the scenery.  There are 3D maps you can push across and tap icons for further information.  The content of the app is historically accurate and the students will find it very engaging.  The dozens of images throughout the app are very high quality and give a rich overview of the ancient Roman Empire.  There are several photo galleries throughout the various topics as well.  The app is very user friendly with easy navigation by tapping on the orange topic or the orange bookmark icon in the top left corner.  Or you can simply swipe across the screen to go to the next topic.  The developers of this app have two other apps of the same build: The Last Supper and Firenze (Florence).  I cannot wait to get my fingers on those apps!  If you teach World History, you must buy this app!  It is worth every penny.

American Dreams and World History Documents by Mike Hall II

American Dreams and World History Documents by Multieducator, Inc. are wonderful primary resource apps for your History classes.  There are almost 500 documents (most full text), including dozens of audio and video segments for students to read, watch and listen to.  Do not make handouts anymore! The apps use the exact same format and are organized by topics and time periods, are very user friendly and navigation is a breeze.  Once you choose a document to read, in the top right corner, there are options to print (using AirPlay), email the document, and highlight it as a favorite.  Students can copy text from within the document and paste it into another application (such as Pages).  The apps have been updated recently and even includes President Obama’s 2011 State of the Union Speech. Whether you are discussing just a segment of a document in 10 minutes or looking at one of the more than 50 supreme court decisions, American Dreams and World History Documents are a great resource that should be on every iPad that is used in your social studies classroom.

American Dreams:

Cost:

1-19 copies = $1.99

20+ copies = $0.99 (through Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program)

World History Documents:

Cost:

1-19 copies = $2.99

20+ copies = $1.49 (through Apple’s Volume Purchasing Program)

Review of Time Tours: Chichen Itza by Kathy Burdick

Name of App: Time Tours: Chichen Itza

Free or Fee: $1.99

Rating: 5/5 stars

Why I like it: Take a virtual trip to Mexico to study the ancient Mayan civilization at Chichen Itza. Time Tours: Chichen Itza provides a map of the ancient grounds with Xs signifying important locations on the map. When the user tabs on an X a window opens providing information, picture galleries, comparisons from then to now, and/or animations. In addition to the Xs, there are also 3 eyes on the map and when they are tabbed on the user gets a 360° animated view of that location on the map. The graphics and pictures are superb and there is a wealth of information provided. This app would be excellent for a student reporting on the ancient Mayan civilization. Information about the location of Chichen Itza and its discovery as well as housing, arts, astronomy (particularly the Mayan influence on our calendar today), agriculture, religious beliefs and sports and entertainment are all provided in this one app! There is also a games section that proves to be challenging. The overview of the map provided in Time Tours: Chichen Itza could also be supplemented with the bird’s eye view of the site via Google Earth. So when time and money prevent a field trip to Chichen Itza download Time Tours: Chichen Itza. Where will Time Tours take us next?!?!

Review of Geo Walk HD by Kathy Burdick

Name of App: Geo Walk HD- 3D World Fact Book

Free or Fee: $2.99 (for iPad)

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Why I like it: Geo Walk HD lets you travel the world with your iPad. The app opens with a globe that features card icons. The cards highlight a landmark, a plant, an animal or a person and are located on the region they are from. When the card is tabbed there is a picture on the front and facts on the back. One of my favorite features of Geo Walk HD is the filtering system, which gives the user the ability to hide or show a particular subject (not to mention the cool graphic icons used). For example, if you are focusing on famous people in the classroom you can choose to hide places, animals and plants only allowing the cards featuring people to show. This feature could be used to help students select a famous person, plant, animal or landmark to write a report on. Geo Walk HD would be a great addition to a study on geographical regions allowing students to see plants, animals, people and places specific to a particular region. However, it would be helpful if the globe included major cities, mountain regions or even continent names as a point of reference. Students could even spend some exploring the world on their own and take the quiz(using the quiz mode option) afterward to see what they learned. They could even use Facebook or Twitter (be aware of safety and privacy issues) to pass interesting information they found onto friends or teachers. The graphics, sounds effects and design are exceptional. With Geo Walk HD the world is at your fingertips.

Review of Presidents vs. Aliens by Kathy Burdick

Name of App: Presidents vs. Aliens

Free or Fee: $0.99

Rating: 4/5

Why I like it: Presidents vs. Aliens helps students review their presidential knowledge while destroying aliens. With each correctly answered presidential question, the user flings a token with the president’s face on it at the aliens on the screen. Once all the aliens on the screen are destroyed the user earns a president. There is an option to control the types of questions asked making this app great for many age levels, from those just learning the presidents to adults needing to brush up their knowledge. Questions range from identifying presidents to historical events. There are also flash cards that can be studied prior to playing the game. In the classroom, teachers can create friendly competition by having students study for 10 minutes then playing the game for 10 minutes (time can vary) to see how many presidents each student can earn. Up to 5 players can be saved on each device making it easy for classrooms with fewer devices then students. It could also be used to select presidents for students to report on. The one improvement that could be made would be to give additional information about the question if it is answered incorrectly. All-in-all, this is another great educational app from Dan Russell-Pinson, the maker of Stack the States.

Ansel & Clair's Adventure's in Africa by Applicable2U

Ansel & Clair’s Adventures in Africa
  by Cognitive Kid, Inc.

Recently, educational travel apps are slowly becoming more popular to find in the Apple Store and  today’s review will let your 4-9 year old travel the wonders of Africa.  With a Dora the Explorer or Diego feel, twisted with a little Blue’s Clues, this adventure series educational app will truly stimulate all senses.  Seamlessly, this educational app incorporates a variety of curricular areas in a textbook like app for children.  While on this virtual field trip, children will be developing their language and vocabulary, critical thinking and higher order skills.  Cognitive Kid has recently launched Ansel & Clair’s Adventures in Africa.  With original music and two very adorable characters, Ansel, the intergalactic travel photographer and Clair, Ansel’s brilliant side kick who happens to be a robot. Both friends are from the planet Virtoos and with the help of their spaceship, Marley Peterson, they will explore the continent of Africa.

As Ansel and Clair were traveling the world, Marley, their spaceship broke into many pieces over the continent of Africa. One of your missions is to locate the missing pieces as you explore three regions in Africa: Nile Valley, Sahara Desert and the Serengeti Plains.  Along the way, will never need to question what something is or its role.  Cognitive Kids has incorporated a wonderful page-by-page help guide as well as auditory explanations from Ansel. This African simulation can store up to 4 players as it remembers your achievements along the way.  Amazingly illustrated with life like art, or 3D images, users won’t even realize that learning is actually happening.  Our motto that we try to abide by,”Gaming for a Reason“, is certainly met with the integration of this app on our iPad device.

Applicable2U was amazed at the vocabulary development that this application provides.  In order to find Marley’s missing pieces, users will become familiar with the oceans and rivers surrounding Africa, visit a number of monuments and landmarks as they grasp the various animals and plant life found in Africa.  Navigation within each region is guided by “tracker” buttons. Tracker buttons are either active, not yet completed or completed interactions with objects from that region. Through differentiated instruction, users will listen to Ansel and Clair explain each finding. However, if at anytime, a user(s) requires additional support, simply press the light bulb attached to the tracker and Clairvision will offer a deeper understanding with pictorial hyperlinks, dialog and text.  All explorers have a backpack, inside Ansel’s is a camera and travel log.  Users will collect 29 gorgeous images of animals, landmarks, and bodies of water.  Each stored and arranged in a journal for future viewing.  We were pleasantly surprised to find added games and puzzles that integrate math and science which keeps to the theme of Africa as we explored the various regions.  Who knew that in one simple download that my student(s) or child could travel the world, learn to tell time, and develop a wide range of science and social studies skills.  The integration of mobile learning to any home or school setting is truly effective!

Cognitive Kids has certainly hit home with this travel educational series.  As an educator, Ansel & Clair’s Adventure’s in Africa can most certainly fit into an elementary setting as it meets the academic standards of both Social Studies and Science. Overwhelmingly, Applicable2u can see this is an application that could appropriately fit into a whole, small or individual group setting.  Ansel & Clair’s Adventures in Africa provide opportunities for extended discussions, questions and a true understanding of key vocabulary.  With the integration of such technology, various learning styles are met and content is understood, not just covered.  Learning can happen in a variety ways.  Simply connect your iPad device to a large screen and open the opportunities for a scavenger hunt or webquest like activity where children can discuss content and respond to questions via paper or even a documentation app on your device.  As continents are learned, use this app for research purposes rather than having students freely out on the Internet as it supplements those hardcover books from the library.  Interested in developing science and social studies curriculum at the same time, create a “Find the Definition Of” interactive game as you incorporate an interactive whiteboard to your lesson or unit.  The possibilities are endless which explains why this is gaming for a reason!!!

Applicable2U would definitely recommend downloading this educational app.  Currently it is being offered at a discounted price, so get it while you can!  We are encouraged to see that this app is one of a series and we look forward to future apps added to the iTunes library.  To learn more about Cognitive Kids, Inc., please visit theirwebsite here. Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline by Applicable2U

Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline
by iHome Educator and Knowledge Quest

Ever wonder if your students truly understand the progression of historical events and when they occurred in time? What background information do they have on kingdoms, empires, artifacts and inventions? Where do those terms fall in time as it relates to the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas? Well “wonder” no more! A recent collaboration between iHome Educator and Knowledge Quest, have brainstormed together to develop an historical timeline of events reference application for the iPad. This very user friendly and eye appealing educational app is called Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline. Applicable2U has been flipping through time and thinks that this reference guide is applicable to a multitude of people: educators, parents, and even those that call themselves a “history buff.”

With the large screen of an iPad which is then connected to a desktop computer, history classrooms will transition. From learning through a boring lecture of information to a visual representation as it flowed over time. Upon entering Wonders of the Old, a user will see all time periods and events associated with a particular location. If you happen to be studying one region not to worry. Simply pinch and zoom to a specific period in time. By clicking the images, time periods, informational bubbles and regions, users are then navigated to a browser like window. With the support of Wikipedia, users can be certain that resources are valid and will further enhance and/or reinforce the curriculum. Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline can be used in both a whole and small group environment. It can be implemented throughout various parts of a unit or lesson. In addition, it can also be used as another form of research for students when writing reports, and sharing or presenting information. From our experience thus far in the Apple store, this is the first in depth research like app that we have come across. Just as technology is changing so is the way that we do research. Knowledge whether new or old, is truly in the palm of your hands, just in the format of an application. Another positive that Applicable2U sees in Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline is that it provides the necessary information for building a bibliography or works sited page.

What can Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline do for you? With the implementation of the social studies curriculum across many grade levels, the incorporation of technology, and the development of library skills, the collaboration between these developers is a definite home run! If you would like to learn more about iHome Educators orKnowledge Quest be sure to click the developers links.  Or you can you begin downloading Wonders of the Old Ancient Timeline by clicking here from your iTunes library.
