Color Mixing for Kids HD by Applicable2U

Color Mix for Kids HD
By Eightfold Education

As a child, whether you had a box of Crayola crayons or some other generic brand, the thought of blending colors to create something new would intrigue just about anyone. Now with the help of an educational app called Color Mix for Kids HD, technology and creativity will come together in one simple download. With only a painters palette for mixing, multiple types of canvases, a sponge and four primary colors, early elementary students will feel like an artist. Color Mix for Kids HD is not only fun to explore, but it also meets a number of academic requirements beginning at first through fourth grade.

With a very clean design as you navigate from page to page, users will quickly understand through visual clues or buttons what choices they have that will encourage or develop their artistic side. This educational app is suitable for both home and school use. To begin creating, simply tap the painters palette. Here users are given the four primary colors: red, green, yellow and blue.  The primary color toolbar is referred to as the mixing bar. Immediately users can begin creating a master piece on the right hand side.  To set themselves apart from other art applications, Eightfold Education has added the ability to have multiple fingers drawing at one time. A note to the developers – is it possible to have users each choosing their own color as they create at the same time?  This would encourage and build the life skill of working together and collaborating.   In addition, by selecting the paint palette button, users can explore and discover new colors. Through this discovery, users should recall various art terms learned such as: primary and secondary colors, warm and cool colors, analogous and complementary, or the color wheel depending on the grade level of the user. With very realistic paint blobs, budding arts can click on a color and drop it onto the mixing bar. If you want to remove or start a new color, simply tap the sponge to clean one or more of the mixing bar colors. Once the color exploration is complete, click the green checkmark to continue drawing. As pictures are completed, the user has the option to save their picture to the gallery, empty it into the trash can or to fix any mistakes. Free draw and this idea of color mixing provides an educator another way to assess their students understanding of key arts benchmarks in a less stressful way.

Free exploration is not the only option that a user has within Color Mixing for Kids. For those not yet in school and those that are in school, they also have the ability to color in a variety of animal coloring pages and environmental science lesson connect the dot pages.  A cross curricular application that also reinforces fine motor skills is definite bonus!  Each can be saved to the applications gallery or to your photo album on your iPad device. If desired, these pages can then be emailed, printed, assigned to a contact, turned into your wallpaper or copied. In addition, users can choose from 32 different backgrounds to extend their free drawing experience.   A note to the developer – might it be possible to choose different sized paint brushes as children are manipulating the coloring and dot to dot pages.  With this incorporated additional art standards would be mastered.

Overall, Applicable2U gives Color Mix for Kids HD a thumbs up!  It provides the user an educational, interactive, and fun experience.  If you like what you see now on this version, just wait until you see some of the upcoming updates.  To learn more about Eightfold Education, please visit their website here.  To encourage learners in a variety of ways, begin downloading Color Mix for Kids HD as a way to bring out the artist inside of them.

Whiteboard Pro: Collaborative Drawing App

App Title:  Whiteboard Pro: Collaborative Drawing

Grade Level: All ages

Purpose: A

This is a great way to create drawings or brainstorming collaboratively.

Program Functionality: A

Simple to set up. Works great when connected to another iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You may need to wait 30 - 60 seconds to connect with the other device.

Overall Educational Value: A

Wonderful way to teach collaboration.

Cost: Pro version for iPhone and iPod Touch - $3.99

HD version for iPad - $3.99

Free version  - doesn't have all the colors or features.

Overview:  Whiteboard Pro: Collaborative Drawing offers real-time collaborative drawing. Connect iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and both people can draw on the same picture. Start with a new blank screen or open any image or drawing and collaboratively draw on it. An image opened on one device will be transferred wirelessly to the other device. Marker color and transparency can be changed. Pictures may be saved and also submitted to an online gallery.

Recommendation:  This app could be used both in the classroom or for students' personal use.  Students could learn collaboration and cooperation by working together to complete a drawing. They could brainstorm ideas, annotate a map, play Tic Tac Toe or Hangman, practice math facts or spelling words, or make a list. It could also be used by students or teachers to annotate screenshots or photos.

Depict - A Game That Will Draw You In!

App Title:  Depict

Grade Level: 4-12

Purpose: B
Program Functionality:
A
Overall Educational Value: B+
Cost: $-Free

Recommendation:     I swore my first review for IEAR would not be a game. However as I looked at apps for potential review this month, I kept coming back to Depict. If you are familiar with Pictionary, then you will understand Depict. When you launch Depict you can choose to play a Quick Match or with Play with Friends (which I will get back to in a minute). In an education setting, I would avoid the Quick Match as that throws you into a game with a variety of people that you have no control over.

In Play with Friends mode, if you have no friends available the game with throw you into Solo mode. In this mode, a drawing begins to be displayed on the screen. Along with the drawing, 4 to 6 buttons with the names of what the drawing could be appear. As the drawing progresses the player selects what they think the drawing is. If they are correct they get a point. Then they are presented with another drawing and so forth. The drawings are simple and most look pretty much like what I would draw. A potential pitfall is that people can draw what they want and something inappropriate could pop up. There is a whistle icon on the screen so that if it happens you can "blow the whistle" on that drawing. If it gets flagged twice it is pulled from the server.

When you choose to play with friends, you can set up a friends list and choose from those friends. Depict uses the Open Feint system, so I would recommend that teachers set up the names and accounts for the iPods in a generic fashion. The students then can select to play just with each other and not with just anybody out there. In this mode, the person whose turn it is to draw is given the word and begins drawing. Then the others are shown the list of word choices and make their guesses. When drawing you have access to a pencil tool, an eraser, and a color pallet of about 40 colors. Points are awarded to those who guess correctly and the artist if there are correct guesses. The first correct guess receives more points than the second and so on. The artist also gets the total number of points that the guessers receive. If no one guesses correctly, then no points are awarded. There is a time limit of 30 seconds per round. A game consists of 5 rounds and you can have up to 5 players, so all 5 would get a turn to be the artist. The artist with the most points at the end wins the game.

One other thing, the puzzles use words that, when drawn would look similar. Some of them can be a little difficult. For example one time I was supposed to draw wheat. The other choices were barley, grain and grass. I couldn't decide how to draw wheat different than barley or grass. Also I think students would need to read fairly well to know the words so I would probably recommend this game for about 4th grade on up.

Classroom Use Examples / Ideas: I think this could be a great tool for teaching spatial recognition and detail in the classroom. Students would learn to use space wisely for drawing. They would also develop skill in providing detail visually. I don't know that it would improve art skills but one thing I like about it is that all of the artwork looks pretty similar, so my terrible art skills aren't on display. I also like that this game rewards every one who makes a correct answer and not just the first, although being first does get you more of a reward.

Other: I can't wait to play this on an iPad with that larger screen. I bet the developers can't wait either.

Kid Art - Show #35

Grade Level: Early Elementary

Program Functionality: B / Cleaning your screen requires a shaking of the screen. This seemed like a great idea but my toddler ended up dropping the device while trying to do that and she also lost one of her drawings by accident.

Purpose: A / It is a nice little drawing tool that is very clean. Too many options would overwhelm some of the youngest kids.

Overall Educational Value: B / This can fill a quick niche project or activity in a classroom but it is limited as far as the different stuff you can add beyond lines.

Cost: $0.99

Recommendation: We are recommending this app for personal use and moderately recommending this for schools at this time.
