Beth Burke's notes from presentation at NICE about the IEAR movement...

Accessories

plug that goes in car lighter to go through radio does not work well

Podium - sits up on desktop and holds iPod or iPhone while you work

Connectors - displays video from iPod...something coming, can hook up to musical instruments

Carts - Bretford cart - espensive, but is it worth it? Less expensive way to sync multiple iPod Touches in a USB hub...takes more time, but much less expensive. With the Bretford cart, you can just buy the drawer, not the entire cart.

QUESTION - is there a way to sync so all apps show up in the same place?

iType - Put device right inside and it syncs from there - extends actual device into a full-sized one

Mobicip - filter for iPod/iPhone

Can set restrictions on device itself (set for NC-17 or lower so can't see the apps in the store at all)

iNet SafetyBubble - another Parental Control Internet Filter, but expensive - $19.99 (Syncing to lots of devices? Only have to purchase it 1 time. So, pay the $19.99 once and can sync it to hundreds of devices)

Bsecure - free internet safety device

Here is a screen shot from Apple's website:

At first glance without having held one, I was worried about its potential for education. I have already become more excited about this device as I read more about it and watch more press release videos.

You have to like that all of the 140,000 apps currently in the store would be useable on the iPad. Everyone's current apps will port over as well. The added screen real estate is also very interesting. The potential with art apps is very enticing. How does educational licensing on apps work again? There are many apps that will be greatly improved because of the increased Screen real estate!

I was quite concerned about the keyboard and not having a camera. Come on Apple, why not just make a complete device? Then I saw more information about accessories such as a Keyboard and Camera kit: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/ipad-has-optional-keyboard-dock/ ... Here is more information regarding accessories for the iPad as well: http://bit.ly/9QofSA.

One area that I had not considered is the impact on Textbooks and how this might change the game to a certain extent. Thanks Scott Floyd for planting the seed in my mind with your tweet. Here is an article that talks about textbooks and the iPad.

Well, these are just some of my initial thoughts. Here are my questions already:

How does licensing of apps for schools work by distributing them to school owned "iPads"?

It’s working quite well. 2,100 Abilene students, or 48 percent of the population, are now equipped with a free iPhone. Fully 97 percent of the faculty population has iPhones, too. The iPhone is aiding Abilene in giving students the information they need — when they want it, wherever they want it, said Bill Rankin, a professor of medieval studies who helped plan the initiative.

The University of Washington IT department, UW Technology, supports mobility with seamless public Wi-Fi for all devices throughout its main campus. Morton estimates that in any given month, over 15,000 handheld mobile devices connect to his network — and about 90 percent of those are running iPhone OS.

this blog post was originally recorded using the new dragon dictation iPhone app testing it out for the first time and on my ride home from school today I am I’m recording and going to see if it’ll work for a blog post I was thinking about this application for a little while today and thinking about the educational benefits of it obviously it means that there are a lot of benefits from this I can see using this with a number of different students in my building to help them with the writing proficiency is certainly going to have to be a lot of editing that needs to be done up With Asian punctuation things like that but that in itself is not so good skill that students need help him I have no idea how long this post is going to be at no idea I don’t know how did it turn out but I need to get the staff I can see a lot of benefits from her educational standpoint I can also see a lot of benefits of it personally I tried my wife would love to record a few things up so that I have them written down in that she can provide me with an eye for the honey do list to do so anyway I do not listen to turn out DO a lot of cutting and pasting and editing but I thought I’d give it a try

I tried this app for the first time today after hearing the buzz about it on Twitter. I have seen, but not used any dictation software before, so I really didn’t know what to expect. I was not familiar with this program on the computer, but heard great things on Twitter so I thought I would try it out. As you can tell from the paragraph above, the dictation was pretty accurate. With that being said, my daughter tried using the program at home with less accuracy than me. Of course, there is no punctuation or capitalization in the dictation, but I can deal with that. One thing I learned is that I had a hard time delivering my thoughts in a clear and accurate manner without repeating myself or babbling. However, emailing the dictation is extremely easy within the app. After sending it to myself, I simply opened my email, cut and pasted the paragraph, and started editing. I found this app to be very easy to use – I’d highly recommend it.

Session Outline:

I. Distribute the mission and vision statement of the I Education Apps Review Community

II. Share example blog postings, online discussions and app reviews

III. Provide audience members time to ask questions about mobile learning issues that may be covered within our community.

IV. Share a step by step process of how we do app reviews, utilize our blog, and how we built the online NING community

Brief Summary:

School districts nationwide have begun to experiment and implement mobile technology. I Education Apps Review is a community of educators and app developers who are trying to collaborate with each other to improve our use of these devices. The community’s foundation is an initial blog full of app reviews, educational thoughts and community news. Beyond the blog is a community that utilizes a NING.

This session has information relevant to every aspect of a school. The community of educators includes virtually every type of faculty position within a K-12 school district. App reviews are all categorized in some fashion from grade level to subject.

Administrators should also get a lot out of this session. First, there are several administrators involved in the community who are giving their feedback on how they are using these devices. Second, there is a myriad of topics that range from administrators who are sharing their creative professional use to step by step district implementation plans for their mobile learning device.

Purpose and Objectives:

Audience members will have the opportunity to learn from my work with mobile devices along side the volunteer information provided by the IEAR community members. We will share several reviews of apps as examples and incorporate real-time discussion with our community. Several community members will be attending ISTE as they are very high profile educators.

During the session, we will walk through the I Education Apps Review blog and NING community. Furthermore, we will share techniques for completing our app reviews and the methods with which we have distributed them online. Questions will also be entertained on how we have implemented our blog and NING along with our techniques for growing such a community.
