The following review looks at the app Pizza Fractions, which comes in three levels of play. However, I looked at each app separately.

App Title: Pizza Fractions:Beginning With Simple Fractions (Level 1)

Grade Level: 2nd - 6th grades

Cost: Free

Purpose: A

Pizza Fractions: Beginning With Simple Fractions is one of three fraction-based games developed by Brian West. This game, deemed as Level 1, is geared towards students who are just beginning to develop an understanding of fractions or who needs review of this topic, (2nd grade - 6th grade). This level provides a basic introduction to the concept of fractions in an interactive and engaging format.

Program Functionality: A

This mathematical game is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.  It is user-friendly and easily navigated as students view an animated chef asking them to choose the correct fraction (from a choice of 3) of pizza shown. At the end of the round, the student is given the time it took to complete the round, the number of incorrect guesses and an overall score.

Overall Educational Value: A

Pizza Fractions: Beginning With Simple Fractions  provides a simple yet engaging way for students to become familiar with fractions early on. It will also provide extra support for those students who are struggling with the basics of fractions.

Recommendation:

I recommend this app for both classroom and personal use at this time. With the application  being free, it is an appealing choice for students, parents, and educators. It is an engaging game that allows students to gain skill in simple fractions, including working with denominators.

Classroom Use Examples / Ideas: This application can easily be assimilated into the classroom as a way for students to practice the mathematical concept in a visual and entertaining way or use it as ‘homework for added practice.
