App Title: Pearl Diver
Grade Level: 4th grade +
Cost: Free
Purpose: A
Pearl Diver comes from the creators of Math Snacks, developed by NMSU’s Media Productions (New Mexico State University) and tested in the Learning Games Lab. This game addresses equality and order on the number line, as well as number line properties.
Program Functionality: A
This mathematical game is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. With helpful hint tabs, a student playing for the first time will find it user-friendly and easy to navigate through the game.
Overall Educational Value: A
The student or “pearl diver” swims through the sea and dives to the bottom to harvest pearls according to the given number line and number to locate on the line. The excitement begins when they must also avoid the quick electric eel. The sea, or number line, increases with difficulty. The number lines include 1-10, negative and positive numbers, as well as fractions.
Recommendation:
I recommend this app for both classroom and personal use at this time. With the application being free, it is an appealing choice for students, parents, and educators. It is an engaging game that allows students to gain skill in equality and order on the number line, as well as number line properties.
Classroom Use Examples / Ideas: This application can easily be assimilated into the classroom as a way for students to practice the mathematical concept in a visual and entertaining way or use it as ‘homework for added practice.
