First Words Animals by Learning Touch - Review #1

Grade Level:  Toddler - My daughter who is almost 5 really likes this application.  She will usually play with it for about 10 minutes at a time.  We have had the app for quite a while and she is still interested in playing with it.

Program Functionality: A - We have not had a single problem with the program yet.  My daughter picked up on dragging the letters very quickly.

Purpose: B - The application is meant to help kids identify their letters, animals, and introduce them to spelling.

Overall Educational Value:  B - The application attempts to fulfill its purpose, but we are not convinced that it effectively helps students learn their letters better than traditional methods.

Cost:  As of 3/20/09 - $1.99.

Platform:  IPhone and Itouch

Recommendation:  We recommend this application for personal use but we are not recommending schools to purchase this application for use within a school.

My son loves this application. I saw that the same developer has a vehicles version as well. I may be mistaken though.

Keep up the great work. Love the site!

It is good to hear that your son loves this application and yes they do have a second one at this time that is about vehicles.  Do you feel like it has helped him learn at all or do you see it as a nice toy for distraction?

Thanks for the comment and well wishes... We want to help enhance the use of these devices in meaningful ways.  Please come back and comment a lot as the comments are often times the most important aspect of these types of reviews!

Each time he plays the game he demonstrates his ability to recall the images as well as the letters as he selects them. I have tried the different settings such as toggling off hints and speech. Since he is still very young I do not expect him to spell the words on a consistent basis, but I do like to see him recognizing letters and even the sounds of the completed words.
